Bellagio robbery news continues to come in today, but here is what we do know. A Bellagio robbery did in fact take place and the robber who hit the Las Vegas resort was an armed man who made off with $1.5 million in casino chips. The kicker? The chips may not be worth anything at all.

UPDATE: The motorcyclist who robbed the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas of $1.5 million in gambling chips is likely to find they cannot be spent, a security expert says. Jeff Voyles told KVVU-TV, Las Vegas, that most high-denomination chips have serial numbers or embedded radio chips.

"They're able to track them so they know exactly what was stolen off that game," he said. The helmet-wearing thief entered the Bellagio early Tuesday after leaving his bike with a parking valet. He pulled out a gun and left with chips in denominations between $100 and $25,000.

DID YOU KNOW?

A marriage license costs $55 in Nevada. Many couples choose to marry in Nevada because there is no blood test or waiting period.

Police said other casinos have been alerted and a hold placed on the stolen chips. Voyles suggested the thief had some sort of inside information, because he knew which tables were likely to have the high-value chips.

No one was injured in the robbery, but Las Vegas authorities have spread the word about the situation in fear that the crimes could continue, eventually leading to more violent situations endangering workers and patrons of the casinos.

The thief escaped on a motorcycle. Authorities believe he may have committed a similar crime in the area, less than a week ago. Police say the man involved in the Bellagio robbery stole chips ranging in value from $100 to $25,000.

They say he walked into the casino with a gun, at 3:50am, robbed a craps table and sped off into the night, wearing a jumpsuit and a bike helmet. Police suspect the same man robbed the Las Vegas Suncoast Hotel & Casino poker room about on December 9.

In this incidence, the thief also sped away on a motorcycle. That heist netted less than $20,000 from a poker room cashier, police said. Gordon Absher, spokesman for Bellagio owner MGM Resorts International, says casino chips aren't the same as cash. "At some point they have to be redeemed," Absher said.

About the Ballagio
Bellagio is a luxury, AAA Five Diamond award-winning hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in the Paradise area of unincorporated Clark County, Nevada, USA and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. It is owned by MGM Resorts International and was built on the site of the demolished Dunes hotel and casino. The resort serves as the seat of the corporate headquarters for MGM Resorts International and is considered the main flagship resort of the gaming company.

Inspired by the Lake Como resort of Bellagio in Italy, Bellagio is famed for its elegance. One of its most notable features is an 8-acre (3.2 ha) lake between the building and the Strip, which houses the Fountains of Bellagio, a large dancing water fountain synchronized to music.

Inside Bellagio, Dale Chihuly's Fiori di Como, composed of over 2,000 hand-blown glass flowers, covers 2,000 sq ft (190 m2) of the lobby ceiling. Bellagio is home to Cirque du Soleil's aquatic production "O".
